Most tape failures happen because of what wasn’t done before the anti-slip tape touched the floor. Here’s a step-by-step application guide on how to apply Omni Tech anti-slip tapes for proper adhesion, especially in our Singapore tropical environment where we need to deal with up to 90% humidity and the sudden 3pm torrential downpours.
The "Golden Window" Application Timing
Avoid the Rain: Do not apply tape if rain is forecast within the next 6–12 hours.
The Dew Factor: Avoid early morning applications when condensation/dew is still on the ground. The best time is typically 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM when the sun has thoroughly bake out any surface moisture.
Deep Clean & De-moisturize
Surface Preparation: Use a cleaner/degreaser to remove tropical grime and algae.
The Alcohol Trick: After cleaning, do a final wipe-down with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Alcohol displaces water and evaporates fast, ensuring the surface is truly dry.
Dry Microfiber Rubbing: If the surface feels damp to the touch, use rub with a dry microfiber cloth to "flash dry" the area immediately before sticking the anti-slip tape.
Sun-Baking: If the area is outdoors, allow the sun to hit the spot directly for 30 minutes.
Measure and Cut
Measure and cut the length of anti-slip tape you need for your application area.
The "Round" Secret: Use scissors to round off the corners of your tape strips. Square corners are much more likely to catch on shoes and peel up over time.
Check Surface Temperate: If the floor is in direct afternoon sun, wait until it cools slightly. Extreme heat can "over-soften" the adhesive during application.
Peel and Position
Peel back about 5cm of the backing, then align and position the anti-slip tape as you intended on the application area.
Roll It Out: Use a rubber roller, with firm and overlapping strokes, press the exposed adhesive down firmly and slowly peel the rest of the backing away as you go. In humid climates, air pockets lead to condensation buildup under the tape, which destroys the bond from the inside out.
Pro Tips:
Avoid applying tape over grout lines, cracks, or uneven joints. If the tape has to "bridge" a gap, it will eventually crack or peel. Cut the tape into smaller sections to skip over these gaps.
If you are applying anti-slip tapes on steps, start placing approximately 1.5cm to 2.5cm back from the edge of the step. Placing it right on the edge makes it vulnerable to "scuffing" which leads to peeling.
